Molecular Building Blocks

Molecular building block is a general term for a class of compounds in chemistry, mainly describing virtual compound fragments or compounds with active functional groups. As a small compound with a specific structure, it can serve as both a central skeleton and a peripheral R group to form a complete active drug molecule. In the field of chemistry, blocks or molecular building blocks are virtual molecular fragments or real molecules with active functional groups. Molecular building blocks are the upstream of the entire small molecule drug, the starting point of chemical drug research and development, and also accompany the entire process of drug research and development. In the early stage of new drug development, pharmaceutical companies or research institutions need diverse and novel molecular building blocks to synthesize and screen clinical candidates, and then validate them at the molecular or cellular level, with a demand of milligrams or grams. The molecular weight of molecular blocks is generally less than 300, which is an upstream synthetic raw material for small drug molecules and also one of the innovative sources of new drug research and development. In the early stages of drug development, a large number of molecular building blocks undergo diverse combinations, followed by continuous synthesis attempts, to obtain a series of precursor compounds or lead compounds. By replacing or modifying the groups on the molecular building blocks or the molecular building blocks themselves, ideal active small molecules can be optimized.
